Gunman dead and several injured after shooting in Heidelberg

A man has died after injuring several people with a long gun in a lecture hall in the university town of Heidelberg, German police have said.

They said in a brief statement that the perpetrator was dead but did not give details of how he died. Bild newspaper reported that the shooter had turned his weapon on himself.

The gunman, who was a student, was carrying several firearms, the news agency dpa reported.

Investigators do not currently assume the attack had a religious or political motive, several German news outlets reported.

At about 1.30pm on Monday, police had advised people via social media to stay away from the Neuenheimer Feld area of Heidelberg, where the science faculties of the city’s university, the university clinic and the botanical gardens are located. Students were told by email to avoid the area.

Police did not specify how many people were wounded or how seriously.

Heidelberg is located south of Frankfurt and has about 160,000 inhabitants. Its university is the oldest and one of the best known in Germany.
