Ricky Gervais: After Life star hits out at Pope's 'ridiculous' comments about parenthood

After Life star Ricky Gervais has slammed Pope Francis for his “ridiculous” comments about parenthood earlier this month. In a new interview, the Office actor, 60, didn’t hold back when it came to sharing his views on the head of the Catholic Church’s comments, saying that they “don’t make any sense”.

Appearing on The Radio Times Podcast, the funnyman fearlessly critiqued Pope Francis’ comments.

Speaking about his comments, Gervais said: “I think what he believes in is ridiculous.

“It’s a stupid thing to say, isn’t it?

“How can not having children be selfish?” he added yesterday.

He added that to not have children is a “denial of fatherhood and motherhood and diminishes us, takes away our humanity.”

The Pope also urged those unable to have children biologically to consider adoption.

Gervais’ comments come after he criticised the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, arguing that the coveted honours should be given to people who have “really sacrificed all their lives”.

Speaking of his various awards, Ricky said it is “lovely” to receive nominations, but that taking them too seriously can lead to a “slippery slope”
