Most popular royal tiara is worth huge £400k – and it’s not Kate Middleton’s

The Spencer Tiara worn by Princess Diana is officially the most Googled tiara in the UK, receiving an average of 66,000 searches a year, according to creative resource Design Bundles. The company analysed the average number of Google searches the British Royal Family’s tiaras receive to see which one was most popular.

The other elements of the tiara also come from Lady Sarah’s collection, acquired in the 1870s.

In the 1930s, jeweller Garrard was commissioned to turn the various components into what is today known as the Spencer Tiara.

Before Diana, the tiara was worn by her older sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, on their respective wedding days.

Victoria, the first wife of Earl Spencer, as well as Diana’s niece, Lady Celia McCorquodale, also wore the tiara during their wedding ceremonies.

Based on this figure, diamond expert Max Stone from jewellers Stephen Stone has estimated the price of the Spencer Tiara.

He said: “Based on the selling price of a similar Spencer family tiara, I’d estimate this piece to be worth around £400,000.

“With its incredible detail and the high-quality diamonds, not to mention its popularity, this is no doubt a very valuable heirloom.”

When Diana donned the tiara in 1981, she lay it atop a 153-yard tulle veil, which matched her ivory silk taffeta and antique lace gown.

The impressive wedding dress also featured a 25-foot train.

At the time, the dress valued at £9,000.

With its 80s-style puff sleeves and frilled neckline, the dress remains iconic today, and is currently on display at Kensington Palace.

Embellished with 10,000 mother of pearl sequins and pearls, the dress was designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, a young British couple who worked together before their separation in 1990.
