Sutton Foster on Friday said she tested positive for COVID-19, which led her to sit out Thursday’s preview show of The Music Man on Broadway at the Winter Garden Theater.

The 46-year-old performer took to her Instagram Stories to detail the situation and laud her understudy Kathy Voytko for taking her place as Marian Paroo in the production.

‘Yesterday I tested positive for COVID,’ the two-time Tony Award winner said. ‘At noon Kathy Voytko found out. And last night she went on for Marian Paroo and smashed it.’

The Statesboro, Georgia, native said she was ‘grateful to Kathy and our incredible company’ and ‘grateful to all swings and understudies who keep all the shows going, now and always.’

Foster called her costar in the musical Hugh Jackman ‘a class act,’ and encouraged her followers to ‘get tested, get vaccinated and get boosted.’

The musical issued a statement on Twitter Friday that it has canceled its shows for Saturday and Sunday due to breakthrough cases of COVID-19.

‘Our company would have loved nothing more than to celebrate the holiday with the audience and their families, but the priority is the health and wellness of the cast, crew and audience,’ organizers said in a tweet. ‘We are so grateful to our entire cast and crew — most especially our heroic understudies and swings — for ensuring our speedy return to the Winter Garden Theatre.’

Foster shared a clip that followed Thursday’s show in which Jackman praised Voytko for her performance with just one rehearsal as Marian an hour after learning of Foster’s absence.

Jackman said in his speech, ‘All over Broadway, this is a time we’ve never known. We’re in our fourth preview. We’re all just sort of learning.

‘Swings and understudies have not had a chance to learn. They watch from the corner of a room while we rehearse, while we get to practice over and over again. They just get to watch and write notes and then five hours before our performances they’re told, ”You’re on.”’

He continued: ‘The courage, the brilliance, the dedication, the talent, the swings, the understudies, they are the bedrock of Broadway.’
