Breaking News: Columbia University doctoral student, 30, is knifed to death in Manhattan: ‘Gang member, 25, with lengthy rap sheet’ is arrested blocks away

A Columbia University doctoral student was stabbed to death near the Manhattan campus on Thursday by a gang member who was arrested after stabbing a 27-year-old tourist 15 minutes later, police said.

Davide Giri, 30, a PHD candidate in computer science, died after being stabbed in the stomach by a 25-year-old member of the Bloods gang off-shoot, Every Body Killer, who had 11 prior arrests dating back to 2012, the New York Post reported.

Police arrested the gang member after they found a tourist injured with multiple stab wounds in the torso on West 110th Street and Cathedral Parkway. The gang member was spotted in Central Park threatening a third man with a knife.

The injured tourist was taken to a nearby hospital and reported to be in stable condition.

Columbia University President Lee Bollinger wrote in an email to students, ‘I write with great sorrow to share the tragic news that Davide Giri, a graduate student at the School of Engineering and Applied Science, was killed in a violent attack near campus on Thursday night.’

‘This news is both unspeakably sad and deeply shocking, as it took place only steps from our campus.’

The fatal stabbing of Giri took place just a block away from where Bernard College student Tessa majors, 18, was viciously stabbed to death as violent crimes continue to rise in New York City.
