Barbados has declared global superstar Rihanna a national hero after stripping Queen Elizabeth II as head of state.
Barbados has officially become a republic and removed Queen Elizabeth II, 95, as its head of state in an overnight ceremony attended by Prince Charles and Rihanna.
A final salute was made to the British monarchy and the Royal Standard flag was lowered and replaced.
Prime Minister Mia Mottley announced that Rihanna, the 33-year-old Umbrella singer would be conferred with the honour of National Hero of Barbados to cheers.
In a reference to Rihanna’s 2012 chart-topper Diamonds, Ms Mottley told Rihanna: “May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your works, by your actions.”
