John Fleck discharged from hospital after collapsing as Sheffield United make statement

Sheffield United midfielder John Fleck has been discharged from hospital after his worrying collapse during the Blades’ Championship fixture against Reading on Tuesday evening. The club have released a statement on Wedesday to confirm that the player has been allowed to return home.

Fleck collapsed during the second half of United’s 1-0 victory over Reading.

He was given medical assistance for over 10 minutes. Sky Sports reported that he was conscious and was able to stand with the aid of an oxygen mask.

The Scot was carried away on a stretcher and was taken to Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The club have now confirmed that he has been discharged and have thanked medical staff for their assistance.

A club statement read: “Sheffield United is grateful to report that John Fleck has been discharged from hospital and will return to Sheffield today (Wednesday).

“He was conscious when he was taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital and was communicative with club and medical personnel, as well as his family.

“After comprehensive medical examinations and staying in hospital overnight for observation, he has been allowed home, where United medical staff will continue to monitor him closely.

“United and John Fleck would like to thank all who assisted at a stressful time last night and also everyone for their supportive messages.”

United boss Slavisa Jokanovic revealed after the game that Fleck was conscious and had even asked how his side had got on in his absence.

“He is in hospital. He is conscious and asked for the result,” the former Fulham head coach said.

“Hopefully he will be okay. He is safe, in good hands and we pray that everything will be okay.”

Fleck was pivotal to the club’s promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and played an important role as they finished ninth in the top-flight in the following campaign.

The club were relegated the season after having endured a terrible start.

Fleck has scored once in 18 Championship appearances this term. He has netted 14 times in 226 appearances for the club in total.

United defeated Reading 1-0 thanks to a goal by Jayden Bogle. Thirteen minutes were added on at the end of the second half, largely due to the medical attention given to Fleck.

Team-mate Morgan Gibbs-White, who is on loan from Wolves, tweeted: “Those three points were for you Flecky,” accompanied by a fingers-crossed emoji.

The youngster added, alongside a heart emoji: “Get well soon brother.”

Jokanovic’s side are 16th in the Championship.
