Rangers: Betting suspended on Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking over from Steven Gerrard as manager

Betting is suspended on ex-Rangers and Arsenal defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst taking over from Steven Gerrard as Gers manager – with Russell Martin second favourite in the race for the top job at Ibrox

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the overwhelming favourite to take over from Steven Gerrard as Rangers manager, with one leading bookmaker suspending betting on the appointment.

Gerrard departed Ibrox for Aston Villa after a three-and-a-half year stay in Glasgow, the highlight being last season’s Scottish Premiership triumph without losing a match.

It leaves Rangers, who are top-of-the-table and four points ahead of rivals Celtic, looking for a new manager and Sky Bet have already suspended betting, with ex-Gers defender Van Bronckhorst the favourite.

The former Holland captain, who reached the 2010 World Cup final, made 117 appearances for Rangers between 1998-2001 before moving on to Arsenal.

Since retiring 11 years ago, Van Bronckhorst has managed Feyenoord to an Eredivisie title in 2017, and was most recently in charge of Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R&F before leaving at the end of 2020 to return to his family during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Second in the race is former Norwich defender and current Swansea boss Russell Martin, who played at Rangers for one season in 2017-18, at 10/3.

Ex-Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes is third favourite with John Terry and Frank Lampard further out at 7/1 and 12/1 respectively.

Alex Neil, Slaven Bilic and Dean Smith – who Gerrard has replaced at Villa Park – are also on the list.

After leaving Rangers following a successful tenure, Gerrard said on Thursday: ‘I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club.

‘Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart.

‘I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.’
