‘Never just been about dancing’ Nick Knowles defends Strictly amid elimination 'hoo-ha'

DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles has defended Strictly Come Dancing after fans were unimpressed with the bottom two voted for by the judges and public. The BBC star was quick to point out that while Strictly is a dance show, it’s also about popularity.

Nick, 59, took to Twitter this morning to share his opinion with his 159,100 followers.

He wrote: “Surprised over all the hoo-ha @bbcstrictly with viewers – it’s never solely been a dancing competition any more that @imacelebrity is a survival show.

“Harry @Redknapp won cos people rightly fell in love with him.

“The winner of Strictly will be partly good dancer partly most liked.”(sic)

Nick has experienced competitive reality TV himself, previously starring in series 18 of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! back in 2018.

The presenter finished in sixth place before legend Harry Redknapp, 74, went on to be crowned king of the jungle.

Nick’s reference to the “hoo-ha” that arose following Adam’s elimination on Strictly last night was likely in reaction to fans claiming the wrong couples were in the bottom two.

Olympic swimmer Adam and Katya Jones received the lowest score from the judges on Saturday night, ending up with just 27 points overall for their jive.

The pair received 28, just a point more than Adam and Katya, for their Couple’s Choice dance to Classic by MKTO.

The former Football Focus host has also placed in the bottom three every week for the last five weeks, but the public vote has saved him from having to compete in the dreaded dance off every time.

Some fans weren’t happy with this outcome, as they did not believe either of the couples deserved to go home for their dances.

Ryan Glendenning tweeted: “Why are the public voting for Dan and Nadiya???

“I’m livid he’s the worst dancer in the competition.

“It’s all well and good being entertaining but you need to be able to dance as well.”

However, other fans praised Dan and Nadiya for how entertaining the couple are on the show.

“These two are what Strictly is all about – can’t wait to see them next week,” wrote Twitter user @SophieMullan17 next to a picture of the pair looking shocked that they had been saved by the public.

Strictly returns for Musicals Week on Saturday at 6:40pm on BBC One.
