Jamie Redknapp has claimed that Steve Bruce will want to be sacked by Newcastle as soon as possible.

Bruce took charge of Newcastle’s 3-2 defeat to Tottenham but there is increased uncertainty regarding his future at St James’ Park following the club’s recent takeover.

With many Newcastle supporters wanting Bruce to depart and an £8million pay-off due, Redknapp feels that Bruce will be ‘relieved’ when he is eventually sacked.’

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp said: ‘If I’m totally honest my feeling is that Bruce would like to be put out of his misery. He’s a symbol of the previous regime but he will be hating every second. You can’t enjoy that, he’s a good guy. My respect level for him is so high. When he gets that phone call I think he will be relieved.’

Redknapp feels that it is vitally important that Newcastle make the right appointment when it comes to deciding Bruce’s successor.

Antonio Conte is available after his departure from Inter Milan at the end of last season but Redknapp feels that the Italian may be waiting for the opportunity to manage Manchester United, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side having struggled for consistency.

Redknapp said: ‘It’s not just about a director of football, you need the right man managing the team. To find a good manager right now, Conte has probably got one eye on Manchester United. This would be a great job but Steve will be looking forward to the day coming and taking a break.’

Newcastle are in 19th place in the Premier League having taken just three points from their opening eight fixtures, and they are still awaiting their first league win this season.

Bruce has been in charge of the club since 2019 but has frequently been criticised by supporters.

Following their takeover backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), it is likely that Newcastle will be heavily active in the transfer market in January, but it seems unlikely that Bruce will still be in charge to oversee the spending.

Callum Wilson gave Newcastle an early lead against Tottenham, but the visitors then seized control, with Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min all scoring.

Newcastle had Jonjo Shelvey, who had entered the fray as a substitute, sent off.

Sunday’s game was Bruce’s 1,000th as a manager in total, with the 60-year-old having managed ten different clubs since starting out at Sheffield United in 1998.
