Crete earthquake: Schools evacuated as huge 6.5 quake rocks tourist hotspot

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) has confirmed the earthquake in the popular holiday hotspot. Schools have been evacuated and structural damage as a result of the earthquake has been reported in Arkalochori.

One Twitter user said: “I’m shaking so bad this was the biggest and scariest earthquake I’ve ever experienced.”

Some of those caught up in the quake have taken to social media to share their experiences.

Arkalochori has been confirmed as the epicenter for the earthquake in Crete, Greece.

A number of hotels in the area have now been evacuated in the area following the earthquake.

As well as this, there are a number of schools in the area which have cancelled their classes and closed.

Turkey has now issued a tsunami warning following the earthquakes in Greece.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center and the US Geological Survey had given a preliminary magnitude of 6.0.

The epicenter was seven kilometres north of the village of Thropsano, in Crete.

The magnitudes given by different institues may vary due to the lack of knowledge surrounding the earthquakes in the first few hours and days.
