Drivers warned new UK number plate changes could lead to ‘refusal on entry’ to Europe

The changes are being introduced on Tuesday, September 28, and will require drivers to make changes to their number plate. Prior to Brexit, British number plates featured a circle of EU stars with the letters “GB” underneath.

A Halfords spokesperson said: “From 28th September, British motorists travelling abroad will be legally required to display a UK sticker on their vehicle, in place of the old GB one.

“Failure to adhere to the new regulations may lead to refusal on entry and holidays ruined.

“On hand to help ahead of the change come into force, Halfords are selling magnetic and non-magnetic stickers for £3.99 in-store and online.”

According to the Stoke Sentinel, drivers will need to display a UK sticker clearly on the rear of their vehicle.

This will be dependent on whether the number plate has a GB identifier with the Union Jack, a Euro symbol or a national flag of England, Scotland and Wales.

Drivers may also need to display a UK sticker if their number plate has numbers and letters only – with no flags or identifiers.

When driving in Spain, Cyprus or Malta, drivers must display a UK sticker no matter what is on the number plate.

This is just one of many number plate changes that have occurred this year, with the main change being to the plate itself.

The old version – ‘BS145d’ – has been replaced by a studier, more resilient ‘BS145e’.

The updated licence plates will be able to handle more damage, bending, abrasion, impact and thermal change.

They are also more helpful for the police, as they show up more clearly on number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

Additional changes include a ban on two tone number plates, with only solid black digits being allowed.

All plates will also have to show the suppliers business name and postcode in the bottom centre of the car registration plate.
