Jay Rodriguez scored four second-half goals as Burnley beat Lancashire rivals Rochdale 4-1 to reach the Carabao Cup fourth round. After Jake Beesley had given Rochdale a shock 1-0 lead, Rodriguez ran riot at Turf Moor as two headers sandwiched a right-footed finish before a lucky rebound put the Clarets out of sight in the 77th minute.
Marcus Forss also scored four times, including a penalty, as Brentford thrashed the Football League’s bottom club Oldham 7-0 at home, with Yoane Wissa netting twice and Raphael Diarra scoring an own goal.
Stoke won 3-1 to eliminate Premier League opposition in the shape of Watford. Sam Clucas and Josh Tymon both struck late on for the Championship side after Watford’s Ashley Fletcher had cancelled out Nick Powell’s opener.
Leeds won 6-5 in a penalty shootout to come out on top in their tie with Fulham at Craven Cottage. Neither side had been able to find a breakthrough in normal time and after five penalties each there was still nothing to separate them, having converted three apiece. Both sides scored their first two kicks in sudden death before the Leeds teenager Stuart McKinstry made it 6-5 and Fulham’s Rodrigo Muniz was unable to score, putting the Premier League side through.
Fraser Forster was Southampton’s penalty hero as Ralph Harsenhüttl’s team edged past Sheffield United. The big goalkeeper saved spot-kicks from Rhian Brewster and Oli McBurnie as the Premier League club progressed 4-2 on penalties, following a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes at Bramall Lane.
Sean Maguire and Emil Riis Jakobsen struck late as Preston put the seal on a 4-1 win over Cheltenham. Andrew Hughes and Joe Rafferty had put North End 2-0 up by half-time. Kyle Vassell pulled one back before the late goals made the game safe. Sunderland were 2-0 victors at Wigan in the tie between the top two sides in League One, Nathan Broadhead and Luke O’Nien scoring for the leaders.
