Jake Gyllenhaal Becomes a Troubled 911 Operator in Netflix’s ‘The Guilty’ Trailer

Have no fear, Jake Gyllenhaal is here. The actor will save the day — or at least, attempt to — in Netflix‘s upcoming crime thriller The Guilty, set to hit the streamer in just under a month. If you’ve ever wondered what the day-to-day tasks look like for a 911 operator, look no further than this new movie. Gyllenhaal will star as a worker who experiences every operator’s worst nightmare: someone’s in danger, but he doesn’t know how to help.

Joe Baylor (Gyllenhaal) is clearly used to taking all kinds of calls. Medical emergency? He’s got you. Robbery? Just drop your location. Major blaze? That’s not really his job, but he’ll connect you to the fire department. Joe’s got everything under control — until he receives one life-changing request. When some dangerously vague murmurings from a woman on the other end suggest she’s in trouble, Joe snaps into overdrive.

“I’m sorry, I have to hang up,” the woman says, clearly struggling as a man on the other end demands the phone back. “I’m gonna die.”

It sounds like there’s a child involved, too, which is even more horrifying. Can Joe locate the “white van” she talks about in the call, or is that too hard of a task? Per Netflix’s logline, “he soon discovers that nothing is as it seems, and facing the truth is the only way out.” Uh oh.

Gyllenhaal leads the film with what appears to be a nearly one-man show, tackling most of the screen time as he speaks to voices on the other end. The Guilty is direct by Antoine Fuqua of Training Day and The Equalizer, with a script penned by True Detective alum Nic Pizzolatto.

The Guilty will debut in select theaters on Sept. 24 and will be available to stream on Netflix on Oct. 1. Scroll up to watch the trailer for the upcoming crime thriller.
