“Over the last couple of weeks, as I say, we have managed to evacuate 15,000 people, British nationals, Afghans that worked with us and also Afghans who we identified would be at high risk of reprisals from the Taliban.”
Later in the interview, Cleverly continued his defence of the government’s handling of the crisis.
“The priority we had while we had access to Kabul airport, was to make sure all the people who contacted us, had received approvals and had been called forward got onto aeroplanes while we still had that air access.
“That was the priority and we received a huge influx of correspondence from charities, individuals, from members of Parliament which we were working through and are still working through.
