Charles & Camilla are 'trend setters': The 'big' interior trends present in Clarence House

Charles and Camilla’s Morning Room was originally designed as the breakfast room and was even used as the Duke of Edinburgh’s study between 1949 and 1952. Today, it is used by the Princes of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall for receptions and official visits. The room is tidy and everything is in its place, but it contains many books, photo frames, lamps, cushions, ornaments, and furniture. Interiors experts spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about how the royal couple’s interiors preferences feed into maximalism, as well as how the colours and materials in the room mirror this years’ biggest homeware trends.

Juliette added that the Morning Room’s grey hues, seen on the sofas, chairs, carpets, curtains, and lampshade stands, are also currently on trend.

She said: “Grey is very much still in fashion. A classic neutral shade, grey has been working its way up through the designs for a number of years.

“One of the most versatile colours on the spectrum, grey can be paired with almost anything, forming a key staple in many homes, whether they’re are classic or modern in style.”

Nadia McCowan Hill, Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, agreed that the greys, as well as the other colours seen in Clarence House, are top interiors shades this year.

“Think heavy pelmet curtains, brocade fabrics, trimmed lampshades and worn antique rugs with a hint of faded glamour, more is certainly more with this aesthetic.

“After a turbulent year, the return to vintage-style interiors signifies an appetite for classic design with the nostalgic appeal of days gone by.

“To achieve this look without breaking the bank, seek out newer antique-inspired furniture and lighting that will compliment original artwork and other treasures collected over time.”

Sylvia James, interiors expert at Homehow.co.uk, also detailed how you can try out the royals’ style at home.

She said: “The interior of Clarence House showcases a mixture of maximalist décor and classic antique features which reflect the Royals style.

“This includes patterned rugs and tassel-adorned sofas that work alongside grand paintings and traditional side tables.

“If you wish to embrace the maximalist trend in your home, you should consider investing in a large and colourful rug for your living room or bedroom.

“You can also incorporate some antique elements, for example a vintage lamp or mantel clock.”

Speaking of the maximalism design, Sylvia added: “One of the biggest trends of 2021 is maximalism, which consists of bold colours and patterns mixed together to create eclectic décor.

“They key to making this trend work is to make sure every piece of décor has common tones to create a successful fusion.”

Even Charles and Camilla’s use of gold finishes in the Morning Room is bang on trend.

According to Dusk Lighting’s design consultant, Jamie Moxey, “the new images from Clarence House demonstrate a great example of one of the season’s biggest trends in interior design this year – the use of warm metals”.

Jamie added: “Metals such as gold, copper and brass have been growing in popularity and now we really expect to see them rocket given how beautifully they pair with autumnal reds and creams.

“You can see from the table lamps and wall lights that they have been selected in a variety of styles and colours but they each feature a warm metal finish which ties them together.

“These colours have also been matched to the key furniture, the seating, curtains and rug – which bring a soft design cohesion to the space.”
