‘Cheap and effective’: Mrs Hinch fan shares ‘brilliant’ trick to deter house flies

House flies can be hard to control and can multiply in the home very quickly. Sharing on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one woman asked for advice when it came to deterring the pests from the home.

“Put a cone shaped bit of paper around the bowl or cup that catches them.”

Another wrote: “It might not look good but I use fly paper, cheap and effective and it works very well, it’s brilliant.”

More than 20 comments recommended using fly paper.

One woman explained: “After years of trying to get rid of these pests I decided to use fly paper, I didn’t think it would work but it’s been so good.”

Another fan commented: “Use table salt, put it everywhere including carpets, mats, rugs, under beds, behind units etc.

“Leave it down for 24 hours and then hoover, repeat if necessary. If you have long curtains to the floor you should also wash them.

“Salt and a floor steamer has got rid of all the flies in my house even if it does take some time.”

One comment read: “I put some apple cider vinegar into a bowl and leave it out in the open. The fermented smell will attract the flies and they will fall into the liquid, make sure to change it every couple of days.”

To help trap the flies, one Mrs Hinch fan recommended placing some apple cider vinegar in a tall container.

The woman wrote: “Use apple cider vinegar and a bit of washing up liquid in a tall glass or something and cover it with cling film.

“Make small holes in the top and this way the flies won’t be able to get back up and you can either let them go or leave them in the container for a few days.

“It’s the only method that worked for me, you could also add a little bit of lemon if you’re not a fan of the strong scent.”

Other people also agreed with this method with one person explaining how it “worked miracles” and that it got “rid of the ongoing fly problem”.
