The Crown season 5: James Murray spotted as Prince Andrew in first look at Netflix drama

Filming for season five of The Crown is well and truly underway and a team of legendary British actors have been assembled for Netflix’s next chapter in the life of the Royal Family. Among them is Cucumber star James Murray, who was recently spotted looking completely unrecognizable in character as Prince Andrew.

James Murray has been revealed as Prince Andrew, Duke of York in the latest behind-the-scenes snaps from the fifth season of The Crown.

The English star, 46, is set to replace Tom Byrne as the hit Netflix series jumps forward to explore the Royal Family during the 1990s.

In character as Queen Elizabeth’s third child, Murray was spotted adorned with a grey double-breasted suit, stripy tie and questionable fringe in images exclusively released by The Mirror.

He was also snapped alongside co-star Claudia Harrison, who will be taking over from Erin Doherty as Princess Anne.

The actors were seen in Surrey where the series is reportedly filming a memorial service for the fifth season.

After the Royals’ run-in with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher last season, The Crown will handle the House of Windsor’s role in Britain during the run-up to the millennium.

The series is speculated to kick off with the Queen’s ‘annus horribilis’, 1992, which saw a fire at Windsor Castle and the breakdown of three royal marriages.

Among them was Prince Andrew’s split from his wife Sarah Ferguson; the couple separated in ‘92 and later finalised their divorce in 1996.

Both supporting stars have been nominated for Emmys for their performances this year, so the newcomers all have big shoes to fill.

Succeeding fellow nominees Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies, season five will also star two giants of British TV and film as the central Royals.

Imelda Staunton will take over as Queen Elizabeth, whilst Jonathan Pryce has been cast as the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Star of Pirates of the Caribbean and Game of Thrones, Pryce was also recently spotted in costume behind the scenes of the upcoming series.

He was seen donning Prince Philip’s iconic country look, complete with bowler hat and leather gloves, riding atop a horse-drawn carriage in Stevenage.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s friendship with Penelope Knatchbull, Lady Brabourne, portrayed by Natascha McElhone, is said to feature heavily in season five.

Netflix have yet to confirm a release date for the upcoming outing of The Crown, though it is expected to hit streaming at some point next year.

The Crown seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
