British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu set to net deals worth millions

The 18-year-old has already won at least £181,000 after making the last 16 of the women’s singles at SW19. But that could soon be eclipsed by lucrative sponsorship deals. Emma became the youngest British woman to reach the fourth round since Christine Truman in 1959 when she saw off world No 45 Sorana Cirstea of Romania in straight sets in front of a rapturous Court One crowd.

The teenage wildcard aims to top Saturday’s stunning win today and reach the quarter-finals when she takes on world No 75 Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia.

Bookmaker Coral has made her just 18-1 to win Wimbledon.

Mark Thomas of celebrity management firm TM Media said: “Emma has a glittering future.

“It’s so exciting. She has literally every single thing sporting sponsors are looking for in an up-and-coming icon. The world is at her feet.”

Yet the youngster from Bromley, Kent, seems unfazed and said: “I’m loving every minute and I feel so at home. I’m just trying to stay here as long as possible.”

Commentator and British tennis legend Sue Barker said: “A star is born. She’s just so charming but it was her fierce match play that impressed me the most. It feels like the future of British tennis is great again.”

Emma is coached by Sir Andy Murray’s father-in-law Nigel Sears, who said she was “born to play tennis”. He added: “I knew she was exceptional the first time I saw her.”

The teenager is setting the game alight in a similar way to former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova.

The Russian reached the fourth round as a 16-year-old wildcard in 2003, attracting plaudits and sponsors along the way. She won the tournament the next year, beating Serena Williams in the final, and went on to become the world’s highest-paid female athlete.

Emma’s £181,000 Wimbledon winnings so far are more than six times her career earnings of £28,762. And her world ranking was 338. Both are set to soar.

Born in Canada to mum Renee, who is Chinese, and Romanian dad Ian, she moved to the UK as a two-year-old.

Just weeks ago she was sitting A-Levels in economics and maths at Newstead Woods School in Orpington, Kent. She chose not to travel overseas to play this year due to the pandemic and her relaxed demeanour and uninhibited play have been put down to this alternative focus and hitting with her dad in the street.

Bromley neighbour Dave Moore, 74, said: “Even through lockdown her and her father were playing tennis out on the road. It was virtually every day when the sun was out.”

Bromley Tennis Centre manager Tom Defrates, 37, said Emma would play up to five hours a day. He recalled: “She arrived when she was 10. She would always jump in on sessions and help out with other kids.

“She was never one of those people who thought she was better than anyone else.”
