Mets expect Marcus Stroman back from bereavement list to face Yankees

WASHINGTON — Marcus Stroman is away from the Mets following the passing of his grandmother, but the expectation is he will get the ball Saturday against the Yankees.

The Mets placed Stroman on the bereavement list Monday, a day after he pitched three innings in the team’s loss to the Phillies. The right-hander, who will remain away from the team until at least Thursday, was replaced on the roster by Sean Reid-Foley, who arrived from Triple-A Syracuse.

Stroman’s grandmother passed away last week, but the pitcher still took his normal turn in the rotation.

“He’s in upstate New York with his family and he’s going to be able to do some things while he’s away and just stay crisp,” manager Luis Rojas said before the Mets faced the Nationals.

Rojas added that it’s possible Stroman will throw a side session on Thursday, allowing him to pitch two days later at Yankee Stadium.

The Mets’ scheduled rotation for this week has Tylor Megill, David Peterson and Jacob deGrom aligned to face the Braves. Taijuan Walker, Stroman and either Megill or Jerad Eickhoff are scheduled to start in succession in the Subway Series. The arrangement will give Walker two extra days of rest — he could have started Wednesday against the Braves.

Brandon Nimmo will not rejoin the Mets on Tuesday, as the team had initially hoped. Nimmo will remain with Triple-A Syracuse for the next few days on his rehab assignment, according to Rojas, to receive additional at-bats before returning to the Mets for the weekend.

Rojas said there aren’t physical concerns about Nimmo’s left hand, but he still needs to get “tuned in” with his swing. Nimmo has been rehabbing from ligament damage in his left hand. He was placed on the injured list on May 2.

Michael Conforto was absent from the starting lineup to give him a full day off — his first since returning from the IL last week. Rojas said the humidity and the fact Conforto missed over a month after straining his right hamstring played into the decision to rest him.

Edwin Diaz began play with a 44-inning homerless streak that was the longest active stretch in the major leagues. Over his last 16 appearances, Diaz had pitched to a 1.76 ERA with 22 strikeouts and five walks, converting 11 of 12 saves.
