Daryl Morey’s Twitter has cost him again.

In response to Morey’s tweet last week about the Golden State Warriors’ Steph Curry, the NBA announced on Monday that it fined both the franchise and Morey $75,000. Morey, the 76ers’ president of basketball operations, was found in violation of the league’s anti-tampering policy wherein executives are prohibited from talking about players from other teams.

The Golden State superstar posted on Instagram about his brother Seth’s performance, to which Morey gave a simple two-word response: “join ’em.”

Curry congratulated his brother on Instagram after he scored 30 points in a series-clinching victory over the Washington Wizards in Game 5 on June 2. Morey screen-shotted the post and tweeted his response.

Morey denied the tweet was any attempt to have both Curry brothers in the City of Brotherly Love. In a subsequent tweet he said he was “talking about the fact that we are thrilled [Seth Curry] is here with the @sixers — nothing else!”

Steph Curry is slated to become a free agent after next season, though it is expected he’ll extend his contract with Golden State. Finding max cap space for Curry will prove to be difficult even if he plans to leave the Warriors, as the 76ers have expensive contracts with Tobias Harris, Joel Embiid, and Ben Simmons. Morey is known to create cap space, however, so this task might be doable. In 2017, he acquired Chris Paul for the Houston Rockets by circumventing the cap, having Paul opt into the final year of his contract to prompt a workable trade with the Clippers.

It has been years since the Curry brothers have been a part of the same franchise, and they have never played in a regular-season game together. After going undrafted in 2013, Seth was signed by the Warriors to a non-guaranteed contract. He was waived after the preseason but later joined the Santa Cruz Warriors, Golden State’s G League affiliate, for one season.

This is not the first time that Morey’s Twitter activity has broken the anti-tampering policy. On Dec. 20, he was fined $50,000 for a tweet celebrating the one-year anniversary of then-Rockets superstar James Harden breaking the Rockets’ franchise assist record. In 2019, his tweets also led the Chinese government to suspend its work with the Rockets following a tweet from Morey in support of anti-government protesters in Hong Kong.
