Olivier Giroud signs shock new Chelsea contract extension to follow Thiago Silva and Thomas Tuchel… with N’Golo Kante next on the list of Blues’ deals Marina Granovskaia wants renewed

  • The veteran centre half, 36, will stay another year after an impressive season
  • Somewhat surprisingly, French striker Giroud’s contract has also been extended
  • News comes on the same day as Tuchel’s two-year extension was announced
  • Kante, a key part of the German’s side, is next on the club’s list for a renewal

Chelsea have renewed the contract of veteran defender Thiago Silva for another season.

The Brazilian centre-back, 36, played a key role in the heart of Chelsea’s defence as they won the Champions League, finished in the top four of the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final.

Silva’s renewal comes on the same day as Thomas Tuchel’s new two-year extension to his Chelsea contract, with the German head coach now staying on until 2024.

The 93-cap international signed on a free transfer from Tuchel’s former side Paris Saint-Germain in August 2020.

Silva’s initial contract lasted one year with the option of an extension for another, which is the clause Chelsea have exercised.

He made 36 appearances in all competitions across the entire campaign, scoring twice, and despite some shaky moments has largely impressed with his composure, positional sense and leadership.

The Brazilian started the Champions League final against Manchester City in Porto on May 29, but despite being forced off in the first half, Tuchel’s side secured a 1-0 win and Silva won the competition for the first time.

A Chelsea statement praised his professionalism and commitment, calling him a ‘composed and classy influence’ at the heart of their defence from the moment he arrived.

Blues director Marina Granovskaia added: ‘When we brought Thiago Silva in last summer, we knew we were adding a world-class player to the squad.

‘Thiago has duly shown everyone at Chelsea his immense quality throughout this season, and he has had a huge influence on and off the pitch for us.

‘We said when he signed that we hoped Thiago would add new trophies to his impressive list of honours, and he has done just that with our success in the Champions League.

‘We now hope that he carries on in exactly the same fashion in the coming year.’
