Donald Glover says TV and films are 'boring' because people are 'afraid of getting cancelled'

Donald Glover has claimed that people are creating ‘boring’ and less ‘experimental’ television and films because they are ‘afraid of getting cancelled’.

The 37-year-old rapper, who goes by the name Childish Gambino, returned to Twitter after an extended break Tuesday to take aim at ‘cancel culture’ in the entertainment industry.

Glover said he had noticed social media discussions from people who were ‘tired’ of ‘reviewing boring stuff (tv & film)’ and claimed the fault lies with creators being scared of being ‘canceled’.

His comments come just days after Glover was sued for alleged copyright infringement over his Grammy-winning hit This is America.

‘Saw people on here having a discussion about how tired they were of reviewing boring stuff (tv & film),’ Glover began in the first in a series of tweets.

‘We’re getting boring stuff and not even experimental mistakes(?) because people are afraid of getting cancelled’.

He added in a follow-up tweet: ‘so they feel like they can only experiment w/ aesthetic. (also because some of em know theyre not that good)’.

Glover’s tweets sparked debate on social media with several fans agreeing that ‘PC culture’ is ruining creativity in movies and TV shows.

‘The PC culture has really put a damper on creative work,’ one person tweeted.

Another person agreed: ‘Honestly, it feels like the art in entertainment is getting limited.

‘Take a painting for instance, but instead of drawing what you want, you have to draw this perfectly. And if you don’t, don’t think about coming back for a second painting.’

‘Network doesn’t want to be ‘cancelled’ so they will ‘cancel’ shows/LIMIT creative process and play it safe because of ‘cancel’ culture,’ wrote another.

One Twitter user blasted: ‘b**ching about everything and making everything a issue. participation trophy demographic running public opinion. networks dfw controversy.’

However other Twitter users took his comments more literally, believing Glover was referring to creators being fearful that their shows and movies would be cancelled.

‘(He’s talking about movies/tv shows being cancelled but everyone’s brains are so poisoned by twitter they think he’s talking about cancel culture and getting mad),’ one person wrote.

‘he’s talking about tv shows being cancelled, not people,’ chimed in another.

‘Pretty sure he means TV shows being cancelled bro,’ another person agreed.

Some pointed out that the debate over the meaning of his comments highlighted ‘how fake woke so much of Twitter is.’

Before Tuesday, Glover hadn’t posted anything on Twitter since November.

Last week, rapper Kidd Wes filed a federal lawsuit against Glover for copyright infringement over ‘This is America.’

The suit, filed in New York, alleges the 2018 song is ‘glaringly similar’ to a song Kidd Wes, real name Emelike Nwosuocha, released two years earlier on Soundcloud named Made in America.

It claims there are ‘nearly-identical unique rhythmic, lyrical, and thematic compositional and performance content contained in the chorus – or ‘hook’ – sections that are the centerpieces of both songs.’

This Is America earned Glover Grammys for best song and best record, making history as the first rap song to win the gongs.

Nwosuocha is seeking a trial and millions in damages for lost profits.

Glover is perhaps best known for his music – under stage name Childish Gambino – and his TV series Atlanta, which he both created and stars in.

The series follows rapper Earn – played by Glover – and his cousin Alfred as they try to make it in the music world.

Glover won the best actor in a TV series musical or comedy award at the 2017 Golden Globes for his role and the show also bagged best television series.

‘Day O’ S3 ATL’, Glover captioned the photo.

The season had been slated for release in January 2021, with season four later in the year but the pandemic derailed that timeline.
