Who says you can’t win for losing?
Glenn Close made Oscars 2021 history Sunday — just not in the way the seasoned actor and eight-time Academy Award nominee probably expected to.
After losing Best Supporting Actress honors to “Minari” star Yuh-Jung Youn at the 93rd Academy Awards, Close, 74, became the most Oscar-nominated female actor with absolutely no wins.
For her polarizing performance (it also scored a Razzie nom) as “Mamaw” in “Hillbilly Elegy,” Close earned her a record-setting eighth nomination from the Academy.
Historical note: Her “most losses” ties her with legendary actor Peter O’ Toole, who was also nominated — and snubbed — for his big screen showings eight times. O’Toole did, however, score an honorary Oscar shortly before he died at 81 in 2013.
Despite her loss this year, Close still won the night.
How? Well, by doing “Da Butt,” of course.
When asked by comedian, actor and Oscars co-host Lil’ Rel Howery, 41, to play an Oscars-themed game of name-that-tune, Close immediately identified oldies twerk jam “Da Butt,” by Washington D.C. go-go music band Experience Unlimited.
“It was a classic song,” the sliver-haired diva announced much to the audience’s surprise.
She went on to share some fun facts about the hit, during which she noted that Academy Award-winning director Spike Lee featured the booty-bouncing classic in his 1988 film “School Daze.”
Close then stole the show when she stood up and twerked to the song in her Giorgio Armani dress.
Oh, what a night!
In Close’s case, her missed chances to add the little gold-plated man to her collection of Golden Globes, Emmys and Tony awards date back to 1983.
That was the year she first contended in Oscar’s Best Supporting Actress category for “The World According to Garp.”
She later was nominated in the same category for “The Big Chill” and “The Natural,” but lost each time.
And although she famously warned that she “won’t be ignored” in 1987 twisted romance thriller “Fatal Attraction,” Close’s lead actress chops were overlooked for Oscars honors for her work in that film as well as in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “Albert Nobbs.”
She also was close to earning Best Actress bragging rights for her role in 2019’s “The Wife.” However, she ultimately lost to “The Favourite” star Olivia Colman.
