What Is Amy Poehler’s Netflix Movie ‘Moxie’ About And Why Is It Trending Among Teens?

Netflix has supercharged the riot girl movement with Moxie—a 21st century take from director Amy Poehler, who also appears in the film. This brilliant homage to neo-feminism couldn’t have been timed more perfectly with a release during Women’s History Month.

The film centers on a group of teen girls taking down the patriarchy one zine at a time. Moxie, which is based on Jennifer Mathieu’s 2015 book of the same name, follows 16-year-old Vivian Carter (Hadley Robinson), a high schooler who is inspired to start a revolution at her own school by her mom’s (Poehler) rebellious past.

What Is Amy Poehler’s New Movie Moxie About?

With the help of her dedicated new classmate (Alycia Pascual-Peña), Vivian takes teen angst and a search for justice to the next level by cooking up a plan to fight the sexism and harassment she and her peers face every day at school. You can check out the full movie trailer above. Watch as Vivian uses the power of her own zine, an anonymous work titled “Moxie,” to take on issues like her school’s annual ranking of female students by looks, to a football star (Patrick Schwarzenegger) who chooses to ignore female boundaries.

“The ways in which people are encouraged to participate and lend their voice is so different than it was when I was growing up,” said Poehler during an interview with USA Today. “So much of my last decade of activism is about unlearning the ways in which I learned how to participate.”

Poehler added, “Television and film can do it in a really cool way and kind of show that things are just not as cut and dried and black and white as they seem to be. Sometimes, it’s more helpful to watch or hear or relate to someone who didn’t get it right than someone who did.”

The brand new Netflix original film, which comes from writers Tamara Chestna and Dylan Meyer, also stars Lauren Tsai, Nico Hiraga, Sydney Park, Josephine Langford, Clark Gregg, Josie Totah, Ike Barinholtz, and more.
