Paul Scholes has challenged Jack Grealish to prove himself at the highest level and seal an exit from Aston Villa.

Grealish has reached new heights this season and forced Gareth Southgate to include him in the national team, but Scholes thinks his game can now go to an even higher level.

Speaking about the qualities of the Villa man, Scholes admits that he does believe Grealish – who has been heavily linked with his former club Manchester United – to be one of the top players in the Premier League, but needs to play for a side who have real ‘pressure.’

‘Don’t get me wrong, I love the player, but if he was doing this at Man United, Liverpool, City, one of the top clubs, then he’d be up there, he’d possibly be top three,’ Scholes told OptusSports.

‘There is no pressure on Villa. If he is at a top club then he needs to win every week. He needs to leave Villa to prove that (he is a top player).

‘It is all about him at Aston Villa. He needs to get out now to a club that need to win every week, there is pressure to deliver trophies.

‘He is capable of doing it, but there will always be a doubt until you do it.’

The future of the 25-year-old has been subject to much speculation, with many top clubs of the understanding that Villa will allow their talisman to leave if the right offer comes in.

Last season Grealish captained his side to Premier League survival, following a year-long battle around the drop zone.

The midfielder was rewarded with a lucrative new contract in September 2020 – penning fresh terms on a five-year extension, reportedly earning £140,000-per-week.

The contract is understood not to contain a specific release clause, meaning United or other interested parties will have to pay Villa’s asking price for Grealish, should one be named.
