Joey Barton in talks with Bristol Rovers over becoming their new manager following sacking of Paul Tisdale, just a month after the former Newcastle and Manchester City star left Fleetwood

  • Joey Barton left his role as Fleetwood Town boss at the start of January
  • But he is now in discussions over taking over at Bristol Rovers in League One
  • Talks have been constructive but no agreement has yet been reached

Joey Barton has held talks with Bristol Rovers about their vacant manager’s position.

The League One club sacked Paul Tisdale last week and have a strong in interest in Barton, who is available after leaving his job as Fleetwood boss in January.

Rovers view the 38-year-old as one of brightest young managers in the EFL.

Discussions are said to have been constructive but as of yet no firm agreement for Barton to take the job has been reached.

Barton, it is understood, is keen to have a firm grasp on the club’s footballing operation – however with Tommy Widdrington in the position as director of football there is some doubt over the level of control he’ll be afforded.

Rovers have appointed four full-time managers since December 2018 and there are concerns coaches have paid the ultimate price for poor recruitment.

Barton is happy to work alongside a director of football but whether he is appointed Tisdale’s successor is likely to depend on the club’s overall long-term strategy.
