Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho talks trophy prospects after West Brom win

Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has claimed that his side will end the season ‘where they belong’ after securing their first win in in four Premier League matches against West Bromwich Albion. Harry Kane scored his 13th goal of the campaign in the second half after making a surprise return from injury, before Son-Heung-min doubled the north London club’s lead four minutes later.

Spurs went into Sunday’s match clinging on to their top-four hopes by a thread after three consecutive defeats against Liverpool, Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea.

However, their result saw them climb to seventh in the Premier League table, just four points adrift of the Reds in fourth place.

Tottenham are still in with a shout of ending their trophy heartache this season, with the club going strong in the Europa League and looking forward to April’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

Mourinho was in a bullish mood after the final whistle against West Brom, backing his side to reap the fruits of their labour between now and the end of the campaign.

“I loved the compromise of the players,” the Portuguese boss told BT Sport. “The effort, the determination, the clear wish to show everyone how together they are and how much they were suffering with the bad results and how much they wanted the victory.

“That was the fundamental thing. In the first half we were dominant and could have killed the game.

“At half-time we had confidence, we were positive, I only spoke to them for one minute. We were going in the right direction.

“Harry Kane is a special player in the history of the club. He will beat every possible record. We had very good individual performances today.

“At the end of the season you have the truth, we will be where we belong, where we deserve to be.”

DON’T MISS

Kane’s inclusion in the side to face the Baggies came as a huge surprise to most onlookers, with the England skipper initially expected to spend a number of weeks on the treatment table after injuring both ankles against Liverpool last month.

The 28-year-old was missed sorely by Mourinho’s men after being forced off at half-time at Anfield, with only one goal being scored in his absence.

Son, who has provided much of Tottenham’s attacking threat this season alongside Kane, praised his team-mate after Sunday’s match, claiming that his early return will help Spurs kick on and achieve better things during the remainder of the campaign.

“The lads wanted to win this game,” said Son. “We had a couple of bad results in a row so it was very important to bounce back and get back to winning ways.

“Harry Kane is so, so important for us. He is one of the best strikers in the world. It was only a couple of games but we missed him a lot.

“Him coming back and scoring straight away, it’s what we needed. I missed him.

“The team put a lot of effort in for me and for other players. It’s important we show that we can score some goals.

“I think it’s very important that we believe that we can do better things than even today. Obviously we got the result today but we can do better. I trust my team.”
