Archaeology news: Prehistoric bone emoji found in Israel among world's oldest symbol use

Aurochs are considered to be the ancestor of domestic cattle and were still around as late as the early 17th century in Europe.

According to Dr Yossi Zaidner of the Institute of Archeology at Hebrew University, the site near Ramla may have been used by Paleolithic hunters as a camp or meeting place.

A 3D analysis of the etched bone revealed six different engravings, ranging in length from 38 to 42mm.

Dr Iris Groman-Yaroslavski from the University of Haifa said: “Based on our laboratory analysis and discovery of microscopic elements, we were able to surmise that people in prehistoric times used a sharp tool fashioned from flint rock to make the engravings.”
