Aaron Rodgers may believe his future with the Packers is up in the air, but Green Bay CEO Mark Murphy has a differing opinion.
Appearing on WNFL’s ‘The 5th Quarter Show’ on Monday, Murphy addressed Rodgers’ cryptic comments following the Packers’ 31-26 NFC Championship defeat to the Buccaneers, in which the longtime Green Bay quarterback said his future was uncertain.
“We’re not idiots,” Murphy said. “Aaron Rodgers will be back, he’s our leader.”
Rodgers has three years left on a four-year, $134 million deal but reportedly wants a new contract.
In the 2020 NFL Draft, general manager Brian Gutekunst traded up in the first round to select Utah State QB Jordan Love 26th overall. Considering the team lost a key starter at offensive tackle in Bryan Bulaga and that this past draft was known to be receiver-rich, the Packers’ decision to not focus on those aspects was telling.
Drafting a potential successor admittedly put Rodgers on notice. The 37-year-old then went out this season and posted a career-high 70.7 completion percentage and 48 touchdowns.
Rodgers is the favorite to win MVP after leading Green Bay to the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
“[The Packers have] a lot of guys’ futures that are uncertain — myself included,” Rodgers said. “That’s what’s sad about it, most, getting this far. Obviously, it’s going to be an end at some point, whether we make it past this one or not, but just the uncertainty’s tough and finality of it all.”
