Clubs in the EFL are introducing twice-weekly testing in light of the new fast-spreading strain of the virus.

That sees them fall in line with their Premier League counterparts.

The PGMOL are now following the same testing programme, with most officials dropping off their tests when turning up to Stockley Park for VAR duty. Others have them picked up from their homes.

The Premier League are footing the cost of testing for the officials, it is understood.

To miss out on officiating a match would hit referees hard in the pocket, with a significant part of their salary based on per-game and performance-related bonuses.

If needed, the PGMOL can dip into Select Group 2 should they become short of referees.

EFL sides will use lateral flow tests, which will begin for all 72 clubs on Monday, January 11
