Madonna, 62, takes her family on a 'homecoming' trip to Malawi

She adopted four of her children from Malawi.

And Madonna embarked on a ‘#homecoming’ trip to the African country with some of her family this week, she revealed on Instagram Stories.

The 62-year-old pop queen’s son David Banda, 15, and daughter Mercy James, 14, as well as her eight-year-old twin girls Stella and Estere, were all born there.

She also has two biological children – Lourdes, 24, by her former personal trainer Carlos Leon, and Rocco, 20, by her ex-husband Guy Ritchie. 

One of her twins could be seen gazing out the window during their flight as a dazzling sunrise streamed into the plane.

After they arrived Madonna posted a sweet clip of Mercy enjoying a swing in a perfectly manicured backyard at their holiday digs.

Madonna has set up a Mercy James Institute For Pediatric Surgery And Intensive Care through her charity Raising Malawi.

The institute is part of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi’s second city, and is one of Madonna’s multiple charitable missions in the country. 

During her current trip Madonna shared a snap of their vacation residence, an attractive two-storey house with a spacious veranda and thatch roof.

The Material Girl appears to be at the Kumbali Country Lodge near the capital Lilongwe, where she has reportedly stayed in the past as well.

She uploaded a charming video to her main Instagram page that showed the breathtaking view out the airplane window before they touched down. 

Madge, as she is known to her fans, also let her more than 15 million followers get a look at their car ride down a country road after they landed. 

Malawi has shut its land borders as part of its coronavirus protocols but Americans are still allowed to fly in, according to the U.S. Embassy there.

However Americans traveling to Malawi will have to be tested no more than 10 days before they go, and might get tested again at the airport upon arrival.

The land borders were closed two days before Christmas in an order that is meant to extend until next Wednesday, but some essential travel is permitted.

There was a flare-up of controversy when Madonna and Guy Ritchie adopted David, owing in part to the fact the little boy’s father Yohane was still alive. 

Yohane publicly supported the adoption at the time, telling The Guardian: ‘My interest is in the child’s best chance for health and education.’

He confessed: ‘It was a hard choice to make, but when it seemed likely that David would have a better life with a new family, I could not say no.’

Yet as Madonna recalled in a People interview a few years ago: ‘Every newspaper said I kidnapped him. In my mind, I was thinking: “Wait a minute. I’m trying to save somebody’s life. Why are you all s***ing on me right now?” I did everything by the book. That was a real low point for me. I would cry myself to sleep.’

Madonna and Guy had split up by the time of Mercy’s adoption – and the Dick Tracy star has claimed the divorce led Malawian officials to question her parenting ability.

She ultimately swung the adoption by taking her case to Malawi’s Supreme Court Of Appeal but: ‘The way I was treated – that sexist behavior – was ridiculous.’

Stella and Estere’s father gave an interview to The Mail On Sunday in 2017 expressing shock at the revelation they were being taken from him permanently.

‘I was told from the start that Esther and Stella were going to a rich woman’s home abroad, that she would give them a good education, then return them to me, to live with me and help all of my family,’ said Adam Mwale.

‘Now you are telling me the adoption is permanent. That cannot be true – I don’t want it to be true. I am their father and I will always be their father.’

He maintained: ‘The orphanage boss told me it would be a wonderful chance for my little girls, and for their brother and sisters at home. I was told to agree with everything in court. I did not believe I would never see my girls again.’

The then 40-year-old farmer, who was living in the village of Kayembe, told The Mail On Sunday: ‘I was standing with my brother-in-law who signed the consent forms with me, and we just continued to believe that I would always be the twins’ father and they would be coming home to me.’

Raising Malawi was plunged into scandal in 2011, when allegations of money mismanagement emerged after plans to build a girls’ school were scuttled. 

More than $3 million was sunk into the unrealized project, and the board of directors of Raising Malawi were fired amid the controversy, the New York Times reported.
