Peter Crouch believes it is 'key' Liverpool bring in a centre-back in January transfer window

Peter Crouch says Liverpool MUST buy a centre-back in January as they ‘cannot rely on young lads and a midfielder’ for Premier League winning defence… with Joel Matip now out for at least three weeks with an adductor issue

  • Liverpool are without long-term absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez
  • Jurgen Klopp also confirmed Joel Matip also miss the next three weeks
  • Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have been filling in at the back for the Reds
  • Peter Crouch and Steve McManaman have both called for a defensive signing

Peter Crouch has urged Liverpool to sign a centre-back next month because they cannot rely on their current younger options in the position.

The Reds are without first choice pair Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez after both suffered serious knee injuries earlier on in the season, while boss Jurgen Klopp has also confirmed Joel Matip will miss the next three weeks with an adductor injury.

But speaking to Amazon Prime after the Anfield side’s goalless draw at Newcastle in their final match of 2020, Crouch insisted the Reds cannot rely on the youngsters and also advocated a move for a midfielder.

‘I think getting a centre-half in in January is key,’ Crouch said.

‘I think they have been looking at it, I think they have identified people, behind the scenes they will be working on it.

‘They cannot rely on the young lads and a midfielder  at centre-half.’

Fellow former Liverpool star Steve McManaman also believes recruiting a defender is ‘pivotal’ for the Premier League champions, with the bench beginning to look stronger at St James’ Park with the return of midfielder Thiago Alcantara.

‘Liverpool have brought in good players [in the past], it is whether they can address that situation defensively,’ McManaman said.

‘Thiago is back, when you looked at the bench tonight you thought ‘they are nearly getting to full strength’, they just need that pivotal position.

‘If they can bring somebody in in January, I think Liverpool fans will be very, very happy.

‘They are starting to get their strength back right bang in the middle of the season which is probably the most important time.’
