Five Man Utd exits plus one key Arsenal deal – The six most likely January transfers

The January transfer window is just around the corner, with clubs across the country preparing to do business as they look to strengthen their squads ahead of the second half of the season. Plenty of names have been thrown around regarding potential moves, with some deals looking more likely to happen than others.

One club that looks set to be heavily involved during the window is Manchester United, who could see a number of players depart Old Trafford as the Glazers aim to lower their wage bill in preparation to bring in new faces during the summer.

The Manchester Evening News has claimed that Phil Jones is one of five players expected to move on in January with a host of clubs interested in his services.

Newcastle United are perhaps the strongest link, with the defender having been backed to make the move to Tyneside throughout the summer.

Leicester City, West Ham United and Wayne Rooney’s Derby County have also been tipped to sign Jones, who has not played a minute for the Red Devils since January’s FA Cup tie against Tranmere Rovers.

Another player to face a January exit will be Odion Ighalo, who will return to Shanghai Shenhua upon the expiry of his loan move.

It is believed that United have no plans to pursue a permanent deal given the summer arrival of Edinson Cavani.

Academy product Timothy Fosu-Mensah could also be shown the door, with the club facing the prospect of seeing him leave for free in the summer when his current deal runs out.

He has struggled to break into the side despite productive loan spells with Crystal Palace and Fulham helping to cut his teeth in the senior game.

DON’T MISS

Sergio Romero, who has been deemed surplus to requirements following Dean Henderson’s involvement in the side, remains keen to leave United after he was reportedly denied the chance to join Everton on transfer deadline day during the summer.

Marcos Rojo has been similarly frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with the Argentinian defender not featuring in a match-day squad for over a year.

The pair were omitted from United’s Champions League squad at the start of the season, suggesting that Solskjaer does not see a future for them at the club.

Along with United, Arsenal will be looking to add to their ranks in January with a creative midfielder desperately needed in order to save their season.
