Liverpool player ratings: Roberto Firmino and two others shine in late Tottenham win

Roberto Firmino struck a late winner as Liverpool went to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 win over Tottenham. The two teams looked set to share the points before the Brazilian nodded in from Andy Robertson’s corner late in the day in a game the Reds easily could have lost.

Liverpool took the lead when Mohamed Salah’s effort looped in off Toby Alderweireld’s leg in the first half.

The lead didn’t last too long though as Spurs scored a sucker punch equaliser on the counter-attack.

Giovani Lo Celso threaded the ball into space and Son Heung-min made no mistake, finishing expertly at the near post.

After the break, Liverpool were continuously knocking on the door despite several notable Tottenham chances.

Their persistence eventually paid off when Firmino was on hand to head home the winner before celebrating in front of the Kop.

Alisson – 7

Forced into action in the second half to deny Harry Kane following a sloppy clearance.

Andy Robertson – 8

As expected, he was right up for this. Constant outlet and threat in the first half and came close to assisting Mohamed Salah.

Rhys Williams – 7

Looked composed but was caught napping in the second half as Steven Bergwijn gambled off Son Heung-min’s flick before firing off the post. Overall, can be pleased with his mature performance.

Fabinho – 7

Was first to react to the loose ball after Steven Bergwijn hit the post. Generally solid at the other end and went on a nice run up the near touchline in the second half, showcasing his skill.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 6

Read the danger earlier in the first half when Spurs threatened on the break through Moussa Sissoko and Harry Kane. Crossing wasn’t at its usual best though.

Jordan Henderson – 6

Passing was slightly wayward when switching the play but made his presence known in the middle of the park.

Gini Wijnaldum – 7

Clear Jose Mourinho instructed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko to press the Dutchman but he coped well in tight areas.

Curtis Jones – 8

Another excellent display from the young midfielder, who was the creator of Mohamed Salah’s opener. Always looking to make something happen. Liverpool’s star man.

Sadio Mane – 5

Really poor performance by his sky-high standards. Managed to turn Serge Aurier on several occasions but was very wasteful in front of goal. Gave the ball away on several occasions and looked to be trying too hard.

Came close to striking a winner when he spun Aurier before firing off the top of the crossbar with a powerful left-footed effort.

Mohamed Salah – 7

Struck the opener via a deflection and looked very dangerous throughout. Fired a low shot straight at Hugo Lloris before the break but the Frenchman was equal to it.

Roberto Firmino – 8

One of his brightest performances this season was rewarded with a memorable header late in the game.
