Pep Guardiola admits he has no idea how many points will be needed to win the title

Pep Guardiola admits he has no idea how many points will be needed to win the title during the most open season ever… with Manchester City only six behind table-toppers Tottenham despite winning just five of 11 games

Pep Guardiola admitted he has no idea how many points will be required to lift the Premier League title this season.

Despite only winning five of their first 11 matches, Manchester City are just six points behind leaders Tottenham with a game in hand.

Guardiola has confidence that his team can mount a serious title challenge once they start clicking in front of goal. While this year’s eventual champions will not need to hit the heights set by City and Liverpool, the Catalan is unsure on a reasonable target to aim for.

‘I don’t know, I don’t know how many points,’ Guardiola said. ‘I didn’t know it three or four years ago (either). Tomorrow’s game against West Brom is the only concern.

‘I know everyone has the tendency to figure out what will happen. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, let alone in three or four months or next season.’

Although drawing against rivals Manchester United Saturday, City did not lose ground on the leaders and Guardiola – who is yet to decide whether Sergio Aguero is fit enough for Tuesday’s match – hopes the festive period will bring more consistency in results without the distraction of Europe.

‘Now everyone is playing the same amount,’ he added. ‘We are lucky to play in Europe. Now is the moment to play the game and try to beat them. No more complications.

‘We play in the Champions League and more or less the last stages, we are used to it.

‘We have a larger part of the season with less recovery. Right now what’s happened with the pandemic, everything can happen – it doesn’t matter if more or less recovery.’
