HOT OR NOT: Romain Grosjean is miraculously still alive thanks to F1’s commitment to improving safety… while Jurgen Klopp is great value but his whining to broadcasters about fixtures is becoming tedious

  • Formula One deserve credit for the fact Romain Grosjean is miraculously alive
  • They stepped up commitment to improving driver safety over many years
  • Jurgen Klopp was caught out by Des Kelly, his whining is becoming a bit tedious

It’s Hot or Not time again as Sportsmail’s Riath Al-Samarrai reveals what’s been making him feel warm and what’s been leaving him cold this week.

HOT

Formula One

That crash should have killed Romain Grosjean. His survival was labelled a miracle by most, though that sent too much credit to the wrong place. Grosjean is alive because of F1’s desire over many years to improve safety and their investment to achieve it. Football, among others, could borrow from that principle.

Kevin Sinfield

What a guy. The Leeds Rhinos legend set out on Tuesday to raise £77,777 for his former team-mate Rob Burrow and the Motor Neurone Disease Association by running seven marathons in seven days. At last check he was closing in on £400,000.

Football

The fans have finally been allowed back. Only small numbers and only small steps, but it is progress. As it has been eloquently put once or twice by others, football without fans is rather like Strictly without music.

NOT

BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year

It was one thing that the BBC panel left Marcus Rashford off their Sports Personality shortlist. It was quite another that they found room for Tyson Fury in a year when he is under investigation by UK Anti-Doping and endorsed a man accused of being a crime lord. Perhaps it was no surprise they then lacked the sense to accept his request to be removed.

Jurgen Klopp

He is great value and by any measure British football is lucky to have him. But the whining has become a little tedious and not always administered with the sharpest aim. His exchange with BT Sport’s Des Kelly about the apparent evils of broadcast deals was a rare defeat for the Liverpool manager.

Eoin Morgan

He does not get much wrong, but England’s one-day captain sounded a little misguided with his claim that coded signals from the balcony against South Africa were ‘100 per cent in the spirit of the game’. Pretty hard sell, that.
