Sportsmail reported that Wijnaldum gave a cagey response when asked about his future while away on international duty this week.

He said: ‘I can’t say anything about that.

‘Just ask Liverpool those questions. Don’t they answer?

‘I cannot say anything about it, including whether or not there is talk of a new contract between me and Liverpool. Sorry.’

Inter Milan are ready to swoop for Wijnaldum, while Barcelona are expected to make a fresh approach after failing to agree a deal last summer.

Barca boss Ronald Koeman has admitted Wijnaldum might be an option to pursue in future.

Wijnaldum, 30, was strongly linked to Barcelona over the summer as central midfielders Arthur Melo and Ivan Rakitic left for Juventus and Sevilla respectively, but he ended up staying at Anfield.

Koeman was Holland boss from 2018 to 2020 and 68-cap international Wijnaldum played regularly under his tenure, so they know each other well.

And former Barcelona and Holland defender Koeman admitted to Sport : ‘He’s very good but he’s playing for Liverpool.

‘He could be an option in the future. I can’t say more.’

With Wijnaldum’s contract expiring in June 2021, if he continues to hold off on signing a new deal for Jurgen Klopp’s side he can move on a free transfer next summer. Indeed, he can even negotiate with teams outside of England from January.
