Ellen DeGeneres wins at People's Choice Awards 2020 despite 'toxic workplace' allegations

The Ellen DeGeneres Show has been at the centre of a whirlwind of allegations of alleged “abuse” on set, with various former employees coming forward to tell of their experiences. But despite the recent controversy over a “toxic” workplace culture, the chat show was named best daytime talk show at the 2020 People’s Choice Awards, which was held at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica.

Executives from Warner Bros, who produce the show along with US TV show TMZ, revealed they were “concerned and disappointed” by the reports of “unacceptable behaviour” back in September.

But despite the accusations, the show took home the prestigious chat show award.

And while gracing the stage to accept her prize at the awards ceremony on Sunday night, the popular host paid a loving tribute to her “amazing crew and staff”.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you, from deep, deep down in my heart. I thank you,” she said.

She added: “I know I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realise with that comes responsibility.”

Elsewhere, host Demi Lovato opened the show with a humorous joke about the recent US Presidential elections.

The virtual ceremony saw the stage surrounded by video screens of superfans from all over the country watching at home.
