Chinese bloggers' surprising 'hope' for Donald Trump to secure US election victory

Despite his tough stance towards Beijing, one user of Chinese micro-blogging website Weibo said: “I hope Trump gets re-elected. It would just be better for China.” Some Chinese netizens have even branded Mr Trump Chuān Jiànguó, which basically means “build the Country Trump”.

The nickname describes the impact Mr Trump has in promoting Chinese prestige throughout the world.

Speaking to Bloomberg one Chinese trade negotiator said: “If Biden is elected, I think this could be more dangerous for China because he will work with allies to target China, whereas Trump is destroying US alliances.”

BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonell also claimed Mr Trump makes authoritarian China look like a “sea of stability”.

Even China’s state-run Global Times editor Hu Xijin shared this view on the election and recently tweeted: “Trump, we wish for your re-election because you can make America eccentric and thus hateful for the world.

“You help promote unity in China.”

Commenting on the situation, Gideon Rachman, author of Easterisation: The Rise of Asian Power and Its Impact on the West, told Express.co.uk: “The Chinese must be genuinely torn about the US election.

“Trump’s rhetoric is now violently anti-China and he launched a trade war so Biden might seem a safer choice.

“On the other hand, Trump has been disastrous for US soft power and credibility and has undermined some US alliances.

The editorial added: “If Trump wins, we’ll see more of what we have already been seeing now, without much international support.

“If Biden wins, he will be more likely to seek international consensus to target China and make use of international organisations to put pressure on Beijing.

“Also, Biden is probably more concerned about human rights and democratic values than Trump is.”
It comes with the US Presidential election taking place in America on November 3.

Voters are lining up across the country to elect either Joe Biden or Donald Trump.

Ahead of Election Day, just over 100 million voters cast early ballots either by mail or in person.

“I think we’re going to have a great night,” Trump said during an appearance in Arlington, Virginia.
