He made his debut last year, starring opposite Oliva Colman as Queen Elizabeth II.
The actor said of the process of acting and performing: “I feel there’s a lot of mysticism and snake oil around some of this stuff around how actors talk about their work.
“It makes me a bit embarrassed. Yes, you hope that lightning will come down and invigorate the monster, as it were. But there’s no substitute for working hard.”
Menzies also said he was happier for his characters to have fewer words of dialogue, saying for him less was more.
He added: “You don’t need all of that. It clouds it. If I’m able to get rid of some of that, then I can land the punch better sometimes.”
