Flamengo defender Gustavo Henrique was left in tears on Sunday after sustaining a gruesome testicular injury against Corinthians.

The 27-year-old was reportedly caught by an accidental stamp during a challenge in the first-half, with blood quickly staining his white shorts.

He swapped his shorts for a fresh pair and valiantly tried to play on, but was eventually substituted in the 39th minute and was crying as he left the field of play.

The bleeding did stop after medical treatment in the dressing room but his condition is still being monitored by the club doctors.

Flamengo, the defending champions, won the game 5-1 against their rivals in Sao Paulo.

At the time of Henrique’s substitution, Flamengo were winning 1-0 courtesy of Everton Riberio’s 31st minute goal.

Henrique will be hoping the nasty injury will not put him out of action for too long, with Flamengo facing league leaders Internacional on Sunday.

A win would mean Flamengo leapfrog their opponents but it remains to be seen whether Henrique will recover in time for the top-of-the-table showdown.

Henrique signed for Flamengo in January, penning a four-year deal, and has made a total of nine appearances in Brazil’s Serie A this season.

He came through the youth academy at Santos – Neymar’s former club – and made 216 first-team appearances for the club in eight years.

Though never capped by the senior national team, he did make three appearances for Brazil Under-23s back in 2015.
