The 29-year-old started his career at Selhurst Park in 2008 and featured 137 times before earning a move to Southampton in 2012.

Given the deal is only for just over three months, the former England international is expected to only act as cover for the experienced Joel Ward.

Nathan Ferguson was expected to provide cover as well as competition for Ward following his arrival from West Bromwich Albion in the summer but he is still recovering from knee surgery from February.

The 20-year-old though is expected to return to fitness soon.

Clyne will relish the prospect to feature again following a nightmare final three years on the books at Anfield which ended with his release on July 1 having been training on his own away from the first team.

After falling behind in the pecking order to Trent Alexander-Arnold, a back injury had ruled him out of most of the 2017-18 season before he struggled on loan at Bournemouth the following campaign.
