Bayern had been linked with the brilliant stopper but the European champions sealed a new deal with Manuel Neuer in May.

And it has been reported that Chelsea had been looking at bringing in Ter Stegen as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga in the summer, but instead the Londoners signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes for £22m.

Sport reports that the deal was a tough one to finalise as Ter Stegen’s wage demands were high and could now only be topped by club icon Lionel Messi.

Barca are trying to keep a grip on wages as they have taken a big hit financially during the coronavirus pandemic, but president Josep Maria Bartomeu was keen to get the deal over the line as he sees the goalkeeper as a key part of the club’s future, which will delight coach Ronald Koeman.

And it appears the two parties have now hammered out an agreement with an official announcement to be made in the coming weeks.

Ter Stegen had indicated he did not want to to play for anyone else and that his love for the club and the city were key to him agreeing a new contract.
