Gogglebox backlash: Channel 4 viewers divided over 'brutal' Boris putdowns 'Switched off'

Prime Minister Boris Johnson appeared on The Andrew Marr Show last weekend to face questions over the Government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic as well as his own wellbeing after he contracted COVID-19 earlier this year. The BBC presenter quizzed the Prime Minister on whether he would “step down” if he didn’t feel fit to lead as well as the rising cases of coronavirus despite tougher local restrictions. As the cast of Gogglebox on Channel 4 rewatched the interview, it’s fair to say they were unanimous in their criticism.

While watching the interview with between Marr and Mr Johnson, Gogglebox’s Lee and Jenny took particular issue with the Prime Minister’s claim that the population was “a bit fat”.

“He’s blaming us now,” Jenny said, prompting Lee to react furiously: “But he sent us out, £10 off to f*****g eat.

“What does he expect? We were in lockdown, we couldn’t f*****g eat owt. Everyone was eating at home and then you send us out to f****g eat!”

Gogglebox star Pete was similarly outraged by Mr Johnson’s chat, branding him a “d******d”.

A number of the other cast members praised Marr’s interview technique during his grilling of the Prime Minister.

“Do you know, I wish I had Andrew Marr’s b******s,” commented Ellie to sister Izzi.

“Because he just gives zero f***s, doesn’t he?”

But while the cast all had similar scathing reactions to the Prime Minster’s interview, some viewers at home weren’t best pleased with the “brutal” putdowns.

While a fourth commented: “That clip of Marr and Johnson plus #Gogglebox commentary was brutal! Possibly the must damning summary of the last nine months I’ve seen!”

And a fifth tweeted: “#Gogglebox Never have I understood the point of this show. It’s just boring watching the same ppl moaning about the same things every week. ‘Boris is a t**t…’ wahayyy, ‘omg he’s the killer…’, ‘god these biscuits are nice…’ Zzzzzzzzzzz.” (sic)

However, some viewers saw the funny side of the Gogglebox cast’s criticism of the Conservative Party leader.

“I love it when the goggleboxers rip into BoJo #Gogglebox,” said one fan on Twitter.
