The defence spokesman said: “At about 3.20 am, Pakistan initiated unprovoked ceasefire violation by firing with small arms and intense shelling with mortars along LoC in Mankote sector.

“Indian Army retaliated befittingly.”

A police officer reported that the firing between both sides went on until 5am.

Local residents took shelter in underground bunkers.

According to officials, a special operations group of local police and 16 Rashtriya Rifles searched Gali Girjjan in Surankote.

The officials added that no detentions have taken place so far.

On Thursday the Indian military announced a “ceasefire violation” in the Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district and in the Nowgam sector of the Anantnag district in the disputed Kashmir region.

In a statement, Pakistan has accused India of “the deplorable targeting of innocent civilians” in the Kashmir sector.

The statement from Pakistan added: “These egregious violations of international law reflect consistent Indian attempts to escalate the situation along the LAC and are a threat to regional peace and security.

“It was added that by raising tensions along the LoC and the WB, India cannot divert attention from the grave human rights situation in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.”

The entire disputed sector has been in military lockdown for over a year.
