Of those polled, 72 percent thought Donald Trump did not do enough to limit the risks of contracting COVID-19. In addition, those polled were, on average, split exactly down the middle on whether or not they believed the president would be able to continue to lead the US in a national crisis at the moment – 90 percent of Republicans thought he could.
The poll, conducted by IPSOS for ABC News, involved 506 American adults chosen at random nationally.
Mr Trump remains in the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, where he is being treated for the virus.
The president confirmed he and wife Melania had tested positive for COVID-19 last week.
Following the news, concern amongst Americans regarding the virus has soared in just a couple of days.
The new poll, which was conducted just hours after the president took to Twitter to confirm he had caught it, showed 81 percent of those polled were either ‘very or somewhat’ concerned about catching it too.
This was a leap from 72 percent just half a month ago, and is almost completely due to a rise in concern amongst Republicans and independents, ABC reports.

Only 6 percent of Democrats think the president has handled the outbreak well, compared to 76 percent of Republicans.
Meanwhile, just hours ago the president was seen outside of the hospital where he is being treated – something that a doctor has sharply criticised.
Mr Trump was seen being chauffeured around the hospital in an armoured car as supporters waited outside.
Inside the vehicle, the president was wearing a face mask and waving back at onlookers. He had announced his “little surprise” on Twitter just moments before.
However, Dr James Phillips, a doctor at the Walter Reed hospital where the president is being treated, has sharply condemned the stunt.
He tweeted: “That Presidential SUV is not only bulletproof, but hermetically sealed against chemical attack.
“The risk of COVID19 transmission inside is as high as it gets outside of medical procedures. The irresponsibility is astounding. My thoughts are with the Secret Service forced to play.”
Others supported the president and instead turned on Dr Phillips’ assessment. One wrote: “It is obvious that this particular plastic surgeon, Dr. Phillips, has no idea what he is talking about. Members of the president’s Secret Service detail are not forced to play.”
There have been 7,359, 952 cases of coronavirus in the US with just under 50,000 new ones as of the most recent update, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
