Tottenham have agreed a loan deal with Benfica to bring striker Carlos Vinicius to the club for around £3million.

The London club needed a work permit, which they secured on Thursday, as Vinicius does not have international caps.

Jose Mourinho has been searching for a back-up for England captain Harry Kane and had considered moves for Southampton’s Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins, who eventually moved from Brentford to Aston Villa.

The Spurs boss will now hope that Vinicius solves his problems up front as he tries to navigate a way through his team’s congested early season fixture list.

Mourinho was however reluctant to discuss Vinicius’ imminent arrival after seeing his side thrash Maccabi Haifa 7-2 as his side qualified for the Europa League group stages.

‘No, I want you to ask me that question when it’s confirmed,’ Mourinho said on Thursday night when asked about the deal.

‘Nobody told me it’s done so I’m going to respect the situation, respect the player, respect Benfica and wait a little bit more.

‘Next time we see each other maybe I’m in conditions to answer.’

Vinicius, who scored 24 goals for Benfica last season, will be expected to start mainly on the bench but will also rotate with Kane in domestic cup competitions.
