Vikings: Real meaning behind Ivar 'The Boneless' name exposed ahead of season 6 return

“The real Ivar was one of the greatest Viking leaders to exist, and commander of the Great Heathen Army, a coalition of Norse warriors who came together to invade four Anglo-Saxon kingdoms.”

Michael Hirst blended fact and fiction to construct the story of Vikings, so it’s sometimes hard to tell which of the show’s heroes and villains are actually based in reality or lifted from legends.

Ivar may be based on a real Viking warrior, but historians still don’t truly know where the nickname Boneless came from, or even if the translation is accurate.

Vikings Season 6, Part 2 will be released in 2020 on History and Amazon Prime Video.
