Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Mackensie Alexander has been arrested in Florida on one count of battery after receiving permission from the team to leave training camp to search for his missing father, who disappeared on Monday. 

According to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander was arrested with 28-year-old Evins Clement after confronting the man who was last seen with his father, 65-year-old Jean Odney Alexandre (different spellings for their last names). As first reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Alexandre and the unidentified battery victim were picking berries in a prairie in Okeechobee County on Monday, but the companion returned alone. 

The 65-year-old Alexandre remains missing as Florida police continue their search. 

As of Wednesday morning, the 26-year-old Alexander was still in police custody awaiting an afternoon court appearance.

According to police, Alexandre traveled from his home in Immokalee, Florida to Okeechobee County with another man to pick palmetto berries on a prairie in northwest Okeechobee County. 

Alexandre was reported missing to Collier County Sheriff’s Office, which enlisted the help of the the Okeechobee office. Since then, deputies, K-9 teams, the Florida Wildlife Commission and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office have all joined the search.

‘I can tell you that we have helicopter and ground searches in Okeechobee County that will be going on through the night,’ the Collier Country Sheriff’s Department said in a statement given to Pelissero.

The 26-year-old Alexander signed with Cincinnati as a free agent over the offseason after playing his first four NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings.
